Hi there
My cravings for pizza still lingers after weeks of hunting and munching on my ideal pizzas. So my next cravings brought me and my family to Da Mario Pizzeria near Gallery Hotel, which is a family friendly restaurant hailed by Chef Mario from Abruzzo Italy.
All of his dishes are prepared from scratch, from the fresh dough to the baked bread and down to the sauces, to ensure that authentic flavours, textures & aromas.
On and off over the past years, I have been there about 4 – 5 times as it is off the hustle and bustle of Clarke quay area and at Robertson quay it is really an ideal place to bring your family for that ideal quiet dinner as there is a lot of walkway along the stretch of river too. Great for the kiddos when they start to feel restless 🙂
Once seated, you will automatically served with ice water and bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, good to tame your little tummy as the wood fire pizza takes some time to be served.
We ordered a mixture of seasonal menu and the all time favourites which suits both adults and children.
First order was the octopus salad, boiled octopus served with a salad with lots of cucumber crunch in it. Dressing was vinegar dressing and I must say the octopus was quite generous.
Next is the Da Mario Pizzeria calamari fritti, which is always our usual order, there is just something about having calamari rings with your pizza order, kind of like a prelude to some really good pizzas.
The calamari was very tender and the coating was very thin, lightly battered crunch, goes so well with the creamy and tangy tartar dip.
We also ordered a creamy asparagus soup but it was way too creamy for our likings. The distinct taste of asparagus was lost in this rendition of creamy vegetable soup. In fact it reminds me of Boston clam chowder without the clams and potatoes.
The spicy prawn pasta was served with generous toppings and the sauce was a perfect balance of tanginess and spiciness, the shrimp is always a good natural flavour enhancement binding all the flavors together.
The Da Mario Pizzeria lasagna is another highlight of the dinner. The lasagna was soft almost silky in texture, with a very nicely baked crispy savory mozzarella cheese top, heavenly! It is not very loaded with tomato but rather a mean meat sauce so for carnivorous out there, you might want to order this 🙂
Now moving on to the pizzas, every order is freshly made and serve piping hot to your table, just the look of it, and you know you are getting the authentic pizza, the slightly burnt crust which partner so well with the fresh and savory ingredients to boot. Chunky slices of shaved cheese coating all ingredients together.
If you are into thin crusty pizza base, then you might find this a tad thicker and chewier, of course you won’t find those thick oil drenched toast like pizza base here but it also does not have that crispy paper thin crust however it made up by that very rustic base which gives some depth to every bite.
My favourite is still the parma ham with ricola vegetables, I think this flavour is really hard to beat. 🙂
