DAIKOKUYA TEMPURA SPECIALTY STORE – THE LARGEST TEMPURA I HAVE EVER SEEN

Hi there

The last time I went to Asakusa was a good 7 years back before I start my family and I still remember it was soooo cold during that time, that I hardly did anything there except eat eat eat eat..

But this time round, since it is summer, I decided to really make an effort to walk around and explore, managed to visit yet a gain some old shops, got my dessert fix eating really nice Japanese kakigori or ice kachang.

And also managed to still stuff this gigantic Tendon which is tempura prawns on rice at this really authentic traditional tempura shop called Daikokuya.

They are pretty famous for their gigantic tempura prawns on rice which can barely placed on the bowl of rice.

I didn’t go for the all prawns set but decided on the one with tempura prawns, vegetables and fish. I think it is a much better choice because although the tempura is huge, it is also because the dough they used is really thick. I am not kidding, just eating the tempura already makes you filled up pretty easily.

Also instead of using reguar oil to fried their tempura, they use sesame oil, guess that’s why their tempura comes out in a much darker brown tone, rather than the fluffy light golden ones.

As you can see on the photo, it is so huge, I can’t even see the rice beneath. Oh and I love the pickles that it served together, not the sourish ones you normally get, but really refreshing crunchy ones that clear your palate instantly.

Each bowl cost less than SGD20, although price is okay, but I would very much share this with someone else than eating all by myself so that I can still explore around Asakusa for more snacks. 🙂
