DAISO PRODUCTS REVIEW – MIRIN JAPANESE COOKING WINE

Hi there,

When you go to Daiso for shopping next time, you might want to get this bottle of mirin which is a sweet Japanese wine use for cooking.

This is indispensable in every japanese kitchen just like how soya sauce is to all Chinese, so give it a try and see if it is going to be your best companion in the kitchen – a kitchen must have indeed.

Daiso Products Mirin

To me, the three most important thing in every kitchen that you must have is oil, soya sauce and cooking wine.

You can just add soya sauce for any no frills recipes but mirin will add depth to the dish you cook, giving it a nice finishing touch and round off the look of the dish as the sugar content perk up the look and taste of it.

Enough said on it’s goodness, so how exactly do you use it?

You can use it in stew, marinates, stir fry, I even pour this when I cook Japanese clay pot rice or miso soup with lots of ingredients. This cooking wine instantly perks up any dishes, although I am not quite sure if it is the sugar content but I truly like using this Japanese sweet cooking wine. I usually use around one tablespoon on each dish I cook.

And as I always find this selling out quite fast, I like to stock up when I see it at Daiso. Other brands from supermarkets can set you back over $3.5 or more, so for me Daiso brand is a better choice, as it cost only $2 and can last me for quite a while, a cheap and good deal.

Do take note as this is sweet so you will not require to add any sugar to your dishes if you use this. Another thing to take note of is no matter what, it is still cooking wine so you ought to cook a while before you turn off the fire to evaporate out some alcohol content. I know, it can be tempting to have the alcohol in it and let everyone be merry & chomping down the food, still try your best not to 🙂

So next time when you are at Daiso, remember to check out this mirin and bring home one before the stock runs out.

Happy cooking!

  1. hi! happen to come across your blog and its awesome! today i just bought the mirin sauce and soba sauce.. as my bf’s mom always used this 2 products for everything! So she taught me to use it to bake salmon, and i find it delicious and not too salty.. btw, have you try the other mirin sauce that is green coloured bottle? I believe thats cooking wine too.. but not sure what is the difference.. any idea?

    thanks =)

    1. Hi Mei Yee
      Thanks! Glad you like the post 🙂
      Yes, you can really use mirin sauce and soba sauce on many dishes, it is so versatile and for just $2 a bottle, it can really goes a long way! As for green bottle, do you mean those you find in Daiso or Japanese supermarket? In Daiso, they do have the green bottle cooking wine, but it is regular cooking wine, so it is without the sweetness. When I runs out of mirin, I usually use the regualr cooking wine (sake) and add some sugar in the dish.
      Some dishes call for cooking wine like some japanese pork stew, so that’s when you will need to use it, besides that I find mirin is sufficient to help me pull through most dishes as the sweetness give is a very nice fragrant. 🙂 Hope this helps 🙂
