Hi there
Once I heard Akashi opened a new Gyoza joint at Robinson Orchard, I already made my way there to check it out, because I want to know if their gyoza is served just like how my family like it. ^^
Greet by a few packets of tissue and tonnes of cards and condiments when we were seated, by the way, the tissue we were told is 50 cents per packet, not sure is additional or not.
The menu is pretty limited, one possible reason is they want to concentrate in just the main highlighted dishes they have which is the jyajya men and also gyoza.
You can check out the pricing from this, self service expected but don’t you worry, I think we were approached by at least 4 staff to come and explain to us how this works.
There are tonnes of condiments for you to choose from to pair with your gyoza and also noodles. 🙂
Salad comes first with good portion of fresh avocado, yum.
Then come my main focus which is the gyoza, we ordered one with meat and one with vegetables only. Both are really nice indeed!, they are nicely crisped at the bottom while the rest of the skin is still soft and a little chewy. The fillings are really juicy and I must admit I was surprise by how the vegetables flavour taste better than the meat!
Garlic fried rice comes in a small portion, good enough for 1 person.
And the other highlight they have is this jya jya men which is like a jya chiang mien if you were to compare, a hybrid with japanese perhaps?
It comes with a half boiled eggs, and you are suppose to immediately mixed up the spring onions, cucumber slices and miso paste with noodles before it turns dry.
Only after you are left with 2 mouthful left, crack the eggs in and ask the waiter to boil some really hot boiling water over it which you mix it further, you then add more miso paste and then drink up the soup with the noodles.
I am not so much of the fan of this eating style, because I felt the soup was still quite blend and more to the gimmicks then actual good stuff. I prefer the noodles without the soup.
In case you forget, there is a card there to teach you how to “cook” it too.
This is definitely a new way of eating because even my japanese colleauges know nothing about this style, haha…
Will I be back, definitely, but only for the gyoza and perhaps to try out the sides. 🙂 At $4.90 for a good plate of gyoza, this is a steal.
And it doesn’t hurt that it is right at the basement of Robinson so you get to check out all the kitchen stuff if you are like a kitchen fanatics like me. haha..
And if you want to have a change of mind, you can always head over to the next store which is also under Akashi group selling premium sushi. 🙂
