IKEA KITCHEN GADGETS – POTATO MASHER

Hi there,

If you are a potato salad franatic like me, you must have a potato masher. Although it look like a rather bulky tool & such simple design to begin with,  it fully redeem itself with its capability – a main stay in my kitchen gadget & tool inventory.

I got this potato masher a few years back in Ikea for less than $10, it is made of stainless steel and has a comfy handle for you to mash up whatever concoction you may have.

Potato Masher

I mostly use this for mashed potato, by just boiling the potatoes in salted boiling water until cooked, sieved out, slit a few incision across the potato skin and let it run under tap water for 10 secs, and you will get to peel off the potato skin in secs. No more the old school method of pre peeling the potato skin as it will tampered the taste of the potato and make it less fluffy.

What you need to do is just use this masher to mash through the potato in a big bowl and pour in a little melted butter or buttermilk or just plan fresh milk. What I like to do is I will also boil a few garlic with the mash potato, so I will get to mash up both the potato and the garlic and pour in some butter & milk to get that velvety texture.

Of course you can also use any overnight gravy or instant gravy from packet mix to make a gravy for the potato, but I prefer to have it with some crispy bacon bits & spring onions instead, to get that wonderful mash potato which is so versatile to be used for lunch, dinner or even breakfast.

While for snack, you can also make a mean potato salad with mashed potato and drizzle with japanese mayo, and add in any vegetables you like. You can check out my other post which is the recipe for Japanese potato salad.

Besides using this masher for potatoes, try using sweet potatoes, butternut, pumpkin or even cauliflower, potato masher can be a great help too if you want to make potato patties. I also use this for meat patties to get that extra oomph to the texture.

You might just fall in love with this if you see how convenient it is, rather than a plain old fork which will take you ages to break down the good potato into crumbs. Whip out this tool & enjoy cooking rather than slaving in the kitchen. 🙂

By the way, Ikea does store quite a lot of useful tools, sleek design, doesn’t hurt your wallet a bit, and full of great functionalities, what’s more you can ask for?
