INSTANT KOREAN PANCAKES FROM SHINE KOREAN SUPERMARKET – FLAVOURFUL YET INCREDIBLY AFFORDABLE

Hi there

Occasionally I do indulge in instant food, which can be rather comforting per se, food like luncheon meat, instant noodles, frozen pizza or pie, etc. Of course too much of it is probably not that good, but I guess all these can be just life little simple indulgence – occasionally and this time is no different. My little indulgence brought me to instant Korean Seafood & Kim Chi Pancake 🙂

When I was shopping at Shine Korean Supermarket to stock up some Korean rice cake which I tried last time, I saw the interesting array of frozen food they have and one is the frozen Korean pancakes.

It comes in 2 flavors, Kim Chi seafood or just Seafood pancakes. Both will require you to heat up in a pan. I don’t think it is good to heat up on microwave as one of the most important aspect of if is to have it piping hot and very crispy with just the right amount of chewiness to it, and it can be hard to do it with microwave.

I tried cooking Korean pancakes from scratch before, using the Korean pancake flour, simple regular flour or premix but if you are in a hurry, this may be a god send. 🙂

The ingredients in it simply consist Kimchi, Chili pepper, Squid, Onion, Scallion for the Kim Chi Flavor. While for the Seafood version, there are Scallion, Squid, Onion, Carrot, Green Pepper, Shrimp.

Each pack cost $3.60 and comes in two pieces, however everytime I go to Shine Korean Supermarket, they are having offer of 1 for 1 for $3.60. So just do a little math and it is really a steal ! 😉

Ok cooking it is easy and I use my Happycall pan to do the deed, I added just a little oil (half of a 10 cent coin) and place one piece into the pan, close it on low fire. Take you 3 mins and you can flip over and cook the other side.

One thing however, even though you only use so little oil, the pan became quite greasy, I think next time I might as well leave out the oil.

And once it is crispy on both side and it is ready to be served 🙂

Here is the taste test :

Korean Seafood Pancake, in it you can find traces of finely chopped vegetables like onions, capsicum, carrots and also squid and shrimp. Taste wise I think it is slightly bland, make a lot of difference after I dipped into the homemade sauce, instant pop of flavor in the mouth, the seafood taste instantly picked up.

Kim Chi Seafood Pancake, comes with this gorgeous orange color from the Kimchi, flavour wise this one fare much better than the plain seafood 🙂 like this a lot, there are generous amount of Kim chi in it and and also traces of seafood.

As the Kimchi is a preserved vegetables, it gave in a nice crunch besides the crispiness of the batter itself. 🙂 I tried it with the dipping sauce and also tried pairing it up with Japanese mayo, both is excellent.

As for the quick and easy dipping sauce, all you need to do is combine all below :

  • Soya sauce x 1 tablespoon
  • Chilli oil x few drips
  • White vinegar x few drops (optional)
  • Chilli powder x 1/2 teaspoon

Mix all up and serve as a dipping sauce, if you do put in vinegar, test it along to find the flavour and tanginess that most suited you. 🙂

Okay, now come the downside of it. I find the only downside of these pancakes is it can get rather greasy, lucky I have used paper towel to tap on the pancakes before serving so it was okay. I will try it next round without the oil, but I suppose the pancakes itself is already quite oiled up, so better bet is to use the paper towels.

Anyway, for this price, you can get this quality, it is really a good deal not to be missed.

Theses days instant food is no longer the simple microwave affair, even if it is just some monotonous frozen food, you can still make it interesting and really appetizing too 🙂
