JAPAN EXPERIENCE – OKONOMIYAKI EXPERIENCE HOT ON GRILL

Hi there,

Recently, I have been back to Japan for a short trip, trying to try out something which I have never done before. And true to the commitment we have made prior to the trip we did put a big check across several things which I have always wanted to try out.  🙂

First thing first – Food!!

Okonomiyaki which is Japanese pancakes has always been one of my favourite.

Okonomiyaki

It is a mixture of cabbage, flour, eggs, meat or seafood, just mixed all and cooked it on a hot grill.

If you are in Japan, you can pop into one of these Okonomiyaki store.

Okonomiyaki

You can either asked the restaurant to make it and then heat it up on the grill or you can also do it yourself. This time round, we got the one which the waiter cooked in front of us, and we waited anxiously for the tasty treat. 🙂

What they do is that they will mix the dough together, and place it on the hot grill, you can get to try monjayaki which is pancakes enclosed with noodles, or just okomomiyaki which is without the noodles.

Okonomiyaki

We also ordered yakisoba, which is grilled noodles with meat and eggs, all tasted fantastic because you get the crispy bits with the very fragrant flavoured pancakes.

Okonomiyaki

Drizzle with the sweet okonomiyaki sauce and also sprinkle some of the seaweed flakes, and you will get a very full nice meal that is authentic and affordable. One tips though, you might go overboard if you are not so sure of the portion. We have 3 people and we thought we can manage to finish 3 but we were so wrong, I think 2 orders are definitely good for 3 pax. 🙂

And if you want to try your hands to make it at home, try out my recipe here. 🙂
