When I go to Japan during summer time, and a must try is definitely japanese kakigori, which is loosely translate to Japanese Ice Kachang. 🙂
There are many types of kakigori, traditional kinds with old school toppings like red beans, black beans, chest nuts, mochi, and there are the new ones, which is just shaved ice with syrup like strawberries, lemon, green tea flavours, and toppings of some nice vanilla or green tea ice cream.
When we go to the summer festival, you can also find many shaved ice, which was on plastic cones, and you can see people walking around with shaved ice in their hands.
What I like about it, is how Japanese do their ice shavings, it is so much lighter than the singapore version, and every mouthful does not get that brain freeze sensation.
If you do not like shaved ice, you can also opt for Anmitsu, which is a cold dessert with jelly, ice cream, and other toppings like preserved fruits, dango mochi and of course red bean paste. We managed to try out one in Ginza after some shopping, and it is a place where they are famous for their green tea, so you see, sometimes is not just dessert or restaurants that are selling, even green tea stores as well, that is how popular it is.
And of course one other thing I like about it is the low calories part of it, its shaved ice with light syrup, who does not love it!? 🙂
