JAPANESE RICE CAKE REVIEWS – INTERESTING FLAVOURS OF SHRIMP BEANS AND SESAME

Hi there

Japanese Rice Cake, which is mochi is something which is kind of like a comfort food to me. 🙂

There are so many ways of cooking it, I find it very versatile and the really good grade mochi, you can actually taste the really lovely flavour of japanese rice. 🙂

For Japanese New Year, it is a tradition to eat mochi, and this year, while doing my marketing in Meidiya for my New Year ingredients, i spotted many different flavours, some is for okonomiyaki, some for shabu shabu and also this pack which I got that comes with 3 flavours, Shrimp / Beans / Seasame.

Of course you can follow what the cover show, set up a mini BBQ and grill the Japanese rice cake haha… but I guess it is just not very common in Singapore to do this kind of stuff.

These Japanese rice cake I bought come in individual packaging so it was very easy for me to store in the fridge and just take it out and straight to the pan when I have cravings on it.

I use Happy Call pan to cook these mochi, you can use any non stick pan as well, just low fire, and let it grill on the pan, until the surface is a little crispy and you can feel it is tender inside, which usually does not take more than 5 mins.

You can see after grilling, it look a little puffy too, I like when it is grilled to a little crispy on the outside, so you can really taste the fragrant rice flavour.

As it comes with flavours, I did not add in any other condiments with it.

The shrimp flavour has a tint of saltiness in it, not pungent but it is like a very light shrimp fragrance. The beans flavour is more plain, as the flavour comes entirely from the black beans.

But my favourite is the sesame flavour, as  the sesame after roasting is even more fragrant, and every bite is so addictive, the chewiness, the roasted flavours, and the texture.

I made these for tea time with my family and all of them love it, but remember it is still mochi, so please be careful if you want to let your child try it, I was supervising the whole time when I let my son try it. 🙂

If you like Japanese rice cakes like me, try this out. 🙂
