JIN LONG SEAFOOD RESTAURANT – DEEP FRIED BANANA, SHRIMP, SCALLOP & BAK GUA FRITTER?

Hi there

Someone has been raving to me about Jin Long Seafood Restaurant  for quite sometime which is supposed to serve up some really good Zhi Char, not just your normal Zhi Char, but a place which serve some fushion ones too. 🙂

If I am not wrong, they were also featured on TV for their special fushion dishes on Buffet Buffet.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

So last month, we decided to celebrate Mother’s Day with the all the mummy figures in the family, and decided to try out this Zhi Char place. When we made our reservation, we were already told that is going to be a full house even on a Saturday lunch. wow

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

It is just located under one HDB block, so it is not exactly the easiest place to find, but as there is a HDB parking right behind the restaurant, it can be quite convenient to find lots once you find the restaurant.

Side dish is the usual suspect of roasted peanuts, one of my weakness, my husband and me swiftly polished this off and to whet our appetite for something better to come. 🙂

They do weddings, birthdays, and have many set menus too. They do not have Service Charge even for big celebrations.

Over at the other end of the restaurant, you can see through this red tinted glasses, how the chef is busy cooking up a storm in the restaurant kitchen.

Our first dish is the HK style pork ribs ($12), it is different from those large ribs which you might find in other Zhi Char store, here it is chopped into small pieces, or so called bite size, every morsels are infused with a sweet caramelized coating of savory sauce, addictive on its own and best with hot steamed rice, a good start to a meal.

Bean Curd with Crispy Salted Turnips ($10) is a rare find, actually it is my first time trying this, more than generous toppings of crispy salted turnips (or chai bo) on top of this perfectly fried tofu. With this savory soya sauce gravy. All these just called for more hot steam rice.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Asparagus with mushroom ($10) sauteed in garlic, light and flavourful, the lightly cooked asaparagus helps to clear my palate for other dishes. The asparagus is so fresh and crunchy, I love my greens. 🙂

Cereal prawns is a highlight of our meal, you can request them to deshell it, why have no one thought about that before? soeasy to eat! I like cereal or oat meal prawns, but I am not a big fan to shell it out myself especially in restaurants, because many people have to wash their hands in the miserable bowl of hot tea with 1 slice of lemon, so I always end up going to the washroom to clean my hands and with my son in tow, it can be quite hard to do that.

This dish possess both the essence of the buttery taste and the ice crunch of the oat meal, with just the right amount of spiciness kick to it. Love it. My family actually cleared up the oat meal as well, this shows you how good it is.

Being adventurou, we also ordered the Crispy Seafood Delight & Duck with Crepe ($12) which is so called the fusion creative dish.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Every piece come with a piece of crispy duck piece wrapped around by a thin layer of egg crepe, serve with mayo. I find this dish a little overrated actually, it is a bit too greasy to my likings, but thumbs up to the creation part thou.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

However nothing tops the creative dish I have expected from Jing Long Seafood Restaurant, they have this dish which is deep fried Scallop & Banana with Bak Gua Roll $5 per pc (min 3 pcs) 🙂

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Idea wise it is something rather odd, but that also kind of hypen up my expectation on it. 🙂 But if you think it over, it may work? the savory of the bak gua plus the sweetness of banana, with the scallop and prawn bite to it, all enveloped in this piece of crunchy cocoon of freshly fried batter.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Well I must say… I kind of like it 🙂 I especially like the banana which sort of cut any greasiness this dish might have. Even the odd cousin in this dish which is the bak gua slices turned out to be not that odd afterall, the combination of sweet and smoky flavour does work up the dish too.

Of course if I have to be a little picky about this dish, I would say is the coating, if it were breaded rather than batter kind, I think this dish will taste even better.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Okay, chilli crab wise, nothing to shout about, but the mantou was fried really nicely.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Just to prove how good it is, we ordered twice. 🙂

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

And now how can we end the meal without a wonderful spread of desserts, right? 🙂

We ordered, Yam Paste with Gingko Nut (per pax) ($2.80), the sweetness of the yam was heavenly, it is just chockful of the yam natural sweetness rather than the artificial ones you might tried in some shopping mall outlets. My husband loves this, it also comes with coconut cream, and we tried the before & after version, we still think  al naturale is the best. 🙂

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

Mango Cream with Pomelo ($3.80) is nothing to shout about too, because it is pretty much some run down version, at least the mango does freshen up our palate.

Jing Long Seafood Restaurant at Bedok

I usually don’t go for Longan with Sea Coconut (per cup) ($3), but this time round, I wanted something refreshing, so decided to try it out too. Quite nice as an occasional treat.

All in all, service is prompt and kind of no nonsense, but I don’t really expect too much as there is no service charge. And if you are interested to see what’s in store for your next visit. Check out below menu and pricing 🙂
