Hi there
Do you like to eat Tamago sushi? Tamago is eggs in Japanese and Yaki means grilled, so combine it together, and you get Tamagoyaki 卵焼き / 玉子焼き, which is literally mean grilled omelette. 🙂
This is a very versatile dish, as you can add in your lunch box, as a side dish or as one of the mains. You can add various toppings, and it is a great items if you have a sushi party. 🙂
I have 2 recipes here, which taste equally good, just only if you lack a certain ingredients, you can choose either one recipe.
Type A Ingredients (the proper way) :
- Eggs x 4
- Dashi x 1 tablespoon
- Japanese Cooking Wine / Mirin x 1 tablespoon
- Sugar x 1 tablespoon
- Light soya sauce x 1 teaspoon
Type B Ingredients (the quick way) :
- Eggs x 4
- Soba Sauce x 1 tablespoon
- Sugar x 1 tablespoon
Directions :
- Beat eggs and pour in all the sugar and soba sauce / soya sauce / dashi, just as long as mix it all up
- Pour a little oil on a pan (I used japanese omelette pan to make the shape but if you do not have it, you can also use regular pan but you might need to cut the omelette to your desired shape)
- Take a small piece of paper towel to soak up any excess oil and also oil up the pan
- Pour eggs to fill up the whole pan in a thin layer and slowly flip the sides so that you can curl and roll up the eggs omelette
- Once you have rolled up once, use the small piece of paper towel which has soaked up the oil to oil up the pan again, continue to pour the omelette liquid on to the pan in a thin layer and repeat to roll it up just like how above pics show
- The omelette will become larger as you wrapped up the layers of omelette around it. Use a spatula to help you shape it up
- Cool it before cutting it.
It is not only a simple dish to make, you can also add various fillings, my favourite is to add a slice of kraft cheese in the middle. Great to have it if you are making a japanese breakfast. 🙂
Other options include spinach (but you need to boil it beforehand, just boil a few leave of spinach in salted water for 30 secs), spicy fish roe , hot dogs or even fish cake. 🙂
Use this as a side dish or for handmade sushi, kids will love this if you cut it up in slices too and decorate with some cute children toothpick. 🙂
