QUICK AND SIMPLE RECIPES – SALAD USING KWEPIE MENTAIKO DRESSING

Hi there

Spicy fish roe is a delicacies in Japan that it has transform itself to different products. Don’t be surprise if you come across products such as bread, salad dressing, rice balls, potato chips, rice crackers, biscuits with flavours of spicy fish roe (mentaiko).

I am totally a convert to spicy fish roe, the first time I saw my ex-Japanese boss bringing his lunch box packed by his wife, inside his lunch box, it only contains rice, spicy fish roe and a side salad. I was so intrigued that in my Japan trip, I finally bought it from the airport and cooked my first mentaiko spaghetti, and it tasted so yummy and surreal!

The savory of the fish roe and a little hint of spiciness is so addictive, it has zero taste of fishiness yet it is just something that you can’t get your head around, how the flavour can go well with so many food. And from there onwards, I have been hooked, whenever I saw products that is made of spicy fish roe, it will just go straight into my supermarket shopping basket. 🙂

From my last trip in Japan, I have packed lots of mentaiko spicy fish roe products, and 1 of them is the salad dressing, which you can also find in Japanese supermarkets like Meidiya and Isetan Scotts, other supermarkets like NTUC finest and also Cold Storage also carries this.

So here it is Mentaiko salad dressing, and my first target? Roasted Chicken wraps. 🙂

What you need is just basically :

  • Wraps
  • Salad greens or mix
  • Roast chicken or ham or bacon or hard boiled eggs (really is optional 🙂 )

Directions :

  1. Heat wraps on a non stick frying pan, just warm it up will do
  2. Place a few salad greens & sprinkle some roast chicken, ham or any other toppings
  3. Drizzle in the dressing, that’s it 🙂

Simple and quick and very easy on the wallet, compared to ordering this from a kebab shop or cafe. All these ingredients can fit a lot of people, for $10.

Dressing taste wise, it actually tasted more like thousand island to me, but with a little bit more depth to the flavour. It will takes you several more bites to get that spicy fish roe taste. Not sure if it is because of the color that steer me to think that way, but it is still a quick and hassle free meal that is both satisfying and colorful to brighten up the lunch break. 🙂

Kewpie (logo with a little baby) is always one of the favourite brand, because of their wide variety of products, and you will also not forget their most popular products which is the Kewpie Japanese Mayonnaise, that white bottle of mayo goodness and red cover, showcased in so many dramas and kitchens.

To compare, I will say there are still many more mentaiko products that will works better than dressing, ideas is great but may be the execution is slightly off. But I am still a die hard fans of mentaiko. 🙂

Try it out if you want to break away from the regular dressing like caesar salad, blue cheese, ranch. :
