QUICK AND SIMPLE RECIPES – WAFU PIZZA – PAPER THIN JAPANESE UNAGI PIZZA

By

Hi there

Wafu (和風) which means Japanese style has many interesting yet oh so delicious recipes to explore. If you have been following my blog, you will sense I have a very keen interest in Wafu recipes.

One of the wafu recipes, is Wafu Pizza and there are many Wafu Pizza recipes, but one which I have tried before and have yet to try it out is Unagi Pizza. 🙂

We all know Unagi is great on rice, but how well it goes with pizza, I was one of the skeptical diners but changed my perception after trying it in Japan in a Japanese Italian cafe.

I love how the unagi fluffiness compliments the thin paper like thin crust pizza and the sweet sauce that goes with it, make it a heavenly pair. 🙂

For this wafu recipes, it took me less than 10 mins to prepare and straight to the dining table, so it is one of those quick and simple recipes you won’t want to miss if you are a big fan of unagi. 🙂

Ingredients needed is :

  • Tortilla wraps x 1 (I used Gardenia brand this time as I have yet to try out how texture is, but if you see my other pizza post, you will know what other brands I like to use for pizza base)
  • Unagi or eel x 1/2 piece (you can get those they sell in supermarket sushi counter, or you can try out frozen, of course there is a huge difference in taste)
  • Mozzarella Cheese x 1 table spoon
  • Spring Onions x 1 stalk, chopped finely
  • Unagi sauce or Yakitori sauce or even just soya sauce but must be japanese soya sauce
  • Pepper (just a sprinkle)

As I got some unagi sauce sample, I didn’t go and buy any yakitori or BBQ sauce for this pizza, as long as it is soya sauce base, then it will taste pretty good. 🙂

Directions :

1) Lay wraps on plate and sprinkle mozzarella cheese on it

2) Drizzle the unagi sauce over the cheese

5) Sprinkle chopped spring onions & pepper and crack into slices and tuck in! 🙂

I told you this recipe is less than 10 mins huh. 🙂

Taste wise, I very much prefered not using frozen china eel, as the fish can taste a bit strong and a tad rubbery, but since it is convenient, it can be a quick choice. However, if you use those you get from supermarket sushi counter, it will taste very good!

The fresh spring onions give it a refreshing crisp and cut the savouriness.

If you are not keen in unagi, try using chopped sliced pork belly meat instead. 🙂

You can also drizzle some japanese mayonaise as well, or even crack an egg in the middle of the pizza to make it an even more hearty meal.

For product review wise, Gardenia wraps taste very much different from other brands I have tried, but at $2.50 for 5 pieces, they are of thicker texture and also like a hybrid between large pita pockets and tortilla wraps. The price is so affordable, and because the qty is much lesser, it is so much easier for me to finish everything at one go. Good buy indeed 🙂
