QUICK & EASY JAPANESE RECIPE IDEAS – TACO RICE & TACOS

Hi There,

I first got to know about this dish when I was in Okinawa Japan visiting my relatives there. I have all the while love Mexican dish, but how Japanese put a twist to this dish is beyond brilliant, It is a combination of Tacos & rice, so instead of using Tacos shell, you will put all the ingredients over the rice. Very quick & easy recipe.

You might feel apprehensive initially, tacos + rice!? Tacos like Taco Bell Tacos!? yup, it is, but you will be a convert if you try this out once. It is a very popular dish in Japan, and in Singapore, if you head down to Okinawa Japanese restaurant like Nirai Kanai, Mimigar or En Japanese Dining, you will get to try this too.

Fret not, you will still get to have your fix of tacos ingredients, the fresh lettuce, tomatoes, taco seasoned mince beef, cheddar cheese, all combined together and you will get a fuss free meal and better still, a balance meal of veges and meat. You can taste the sweetness of lettuce & tomatoes and the savory spicy beef.

Basically what you will need will be :

Old El Paso Taco Shells X 1 box (you can choose Jumbo shells or regular shells)
Amirs Mince Beef X 2 packs
La Costena Salsa sauce X 1 bottle
Old El Paso Taco / McCormickPowder X 1 pack
Lettuce X 1
Baby Tomatoes X 1 pack
Cheddar cheese X 2 slices

1) Fry mince beef over high heat with just very little oil (1 tsp), pour in Taco powder and fry till fragrant and pour a little mirin (japanese sweet cooking wine or chinese cooking wine) to give some depth to the taco flavour

Tips : As mince beef after fried can become rather oily, I recommend to tilt the pan and scoop out the excess oil after frying the mince beef

2) Next, finely chop up lettuce and tomatoes in cubes.
3) Scoop some steam rice into a dish, put some cheddar cheese on it
4) Layer mince beef, lettuce, tomatoes and a spoon of salsa on it

5) You can use this same ingredients on regular tacos or cook up taco rice like above.

The whole recipe is really quick and you can get a nutritious meal all in one.

This is also a great party recipe, using small portions instead and placing it on small spoons instead of bowls.

I further tweaked this recipe to a Korean BBQ beef version, but I will leave it on my next posting ^^
