Hi there
I don’t know how many times I have declare my love for Japanese shiso leaves, but I just can’t get enough of it somehow, haahaa… It is of course goes really really well with salad and sashimi alone, but it also goes really well with deep fried items too! 🙂
This is one dish which you can cooked either deep fried or even just yakitori style which is grilled and drizzle with yakitori or teriyaki sauce. 🙂
This dish surprisingly require not as much time as you thought it is, because the cooking time is practically halved as I use thin shabu shabu meat instead of the thick pork chop to cook it.
Ingredients needed (good for 3 pax)
- Porkee shabu shabu frozen meat x 1 pack
- Breadcrumbs (Korean or Japanese ones also can) x 1 cup (for coating)
- Corn starch or flour x 1/4 cup (for coating)
- Egg x 1 (for coating)
- Cheese x 1 slice
- Strawberry x 3
- Yuzu paste x 1 (bought from daiso, this is usually eaten with steamboat as dipping sauce) or red plum paste
- Shiso leaves x 1 pack
- Carrots / Bean sprout x 1 handfull, carrots sliced finely (I use this because it is left over from a salad dish I made :))
Basically the ingredients is really up to your imagination, I was ransacking my fridge and brainstorming what flavours will goes well with shiso, and I find strawberries and cheese will compliment the taste so I picked up this two ingredients, you can also rolled up asparagus or spring onions or anything you find which can compliments too. 🙂
Directions :
1) Place shabu shabu meat on a mat, place shiso leaves on it, then follow by different toppings, colorful isn’t it? 🙂
2) Rolled the shiso leave portion first, then follow by the meat
3) Dip the pork roll in corn starch (this is to dry up the pork roll so that it will have a nice texture)
4) Dip into beaten eggs
5) Coat breadcrumbs over it
6) Deep fried in cooking oil for 2 mins or until golden brown, as we are using the thinly sliced pork, it can cooked up very quickly. 🙂
As I mentioned, you can play around the ingredinets used, one of it you can try is fruits too, which will give it a refreshing take to it.
So far my favourite is the shiso cheese, as the melted cheese is so addictive!
Cut all in halves before serve so you will know which flavour it is 🙂 If you can’t shiso, I can also recommend you to use fresh basil, although it taste rather different, but it will taste good too, Italian VS Japanese it is! haha..
I dipped it in japanese mayo and also tonkatsu deep fried pork chop sauce with a splash of lemon on it. Very very nice! goes well with white rice or sandwich bread too.
The breadcrumbs which I used was a Korean brand as my usual Japanese brand was sold out, Korean brands usually has finer crumbs whereas Japanese ones are larger and coarser, which will gives a better golden tone after deep frying and also a bette crunch. Nevetheless the korean version still do the job. 🙂
