QUICK & SIMPLE KIDS BENTO RECIPE IDEAS – INDOOR FOOTBALL IN A LUNCHBOX

Hi there

Last week I promised my little boy to bring him to the park and make a lunch box last week, and whenever I tell him about it, his eyes will brighten up, so I am also really looking forward to it. But its the weekend and the weather is so gloomy so we have to cancel our little trip. 🙁

However to make it up and cheer him up, I decided to make him a really nice lunch box, he has his eyes to play ball in the park, so I decided to use this theme to make something fun. 🙂

I bought a cute lunch box from Daiso few weeks back as this happy bear face will definitely cheer any kids around, and I am sure my boy will love it as much as I do.  This lunch box comes in 1 tier, but you can still place some items like cooler at the top tier or pancakes, something that doesn’t spill. 🙂

Ingredients is fairly simple and I use mainly frozen stuff as I didn’t make a trip to the supermarket since it is so rainy.

Ingredients include :

  • Macaroni x 2 tablespoon
  • Edamame x 6 pcs (soya beans)
  • Seaweed x 1 sheet
  • Fish balls or Sotong Balls x 3
  • Fish cakes x 1
  • Sausages x 1
  • Brocoli x 1 stalk
  • Egg x 1
  • Carrot & corn x 2 pcs each (I just took it out from the mixed frozen vegetables pack)

I could have just pan fried the egg omelette, but if you want to make the color pop, try to separate the egg yolk from the whites and then pan fry it separately. Sliced it after it is cooked.

Directions :

  1. Boil half pot of hot water with a pinch of salt, and boil up macaroni until half cooked & throw in sotong / fish balls / fish cakes / sausage all in the same pot (Hassle free right?)
  2. Boil some Edamame & run under tap water
  3. Cut out the black hexagon seaweed shape to decorate the football (or Fish balls)
  4. Sieve the macaroni and fried it with ketchup, put in some edamame.
  5. You can then cut the sausages and fish cake in half and make a cross incision so that it will look like a little flower, put a pc of corn or carrot to add some color.
  6. You can also decorate using the edamame by poking a few into a mini plastic skewer

If you want to cook everything with one pot of water, then I will recommend you do

  1. Edamame
  2. Macaroni
  3. Sotong / Fish balls / Fish cakes
  4. Sausages

* Basically the denser flavor ones I put it the last 🙂

I tried a few brands of edamame, and the last time I bought the Fairprice brand, I found it too salty, but this time round, it turns out really good. The edamame is jade green and fresh. Affordable pricing and healthy alternative to other snack. I gave my son to peel all the beans out to practice his motor skills, not bad afterall huh? 🙂 haha…

Tips –  I basically use the fish ball as footballs, you can also change the fish balls to making mini rice balls too.

Tips – As for the sausages & fish cakes, if you want the flower to “bloom” even further, all you need to do is to do the incision before you boil it, the heat will curl up the “petals” automatically. 🙂

I cooked macaroni pasta for my son this time, but you can of course pair it up with any other sides, like sandwiches, rice or rice noodles too. 🙂 I practically pay nothing additional, as all these ingredients are ready in my fridge, so it is really convenient.

His eyes were all sparkly when he saw this happy bear bento set with mini footballs, I guess I have made it up this week. Hopefully next weekend it will be all sunny and I can bring him to the park with a new bento set in tow. 🙂
