RAKUICHI JAPANESE RESTAURANT AT GREENWICH V – ONE WORD – BLAND

Hi there

Heard that Rakuichi opened an outlet at Greenvich V which is just off Seletar Road and thought I will go there for some Mother’s Day celebration as I have never tried there before. 🙂

It was quite quiet and we thought it might be a great time to leisurely enjoy our sushi lunch.

The place is still very new and only opened for a month ago, it consist of both conveyor belt and ordered sushi, menu is fairly straight forward, sushi, temaki handroll sushi, some ala carte cooked items like grilled items and a few rice bowl with udon.Rakuichi at greenwich v

Actually honestly I was quite surprise about the choices in the menu. Perhaps being spoiled by many other japanese restaurants where they have a far more extensive menu to choose from, so far I am not particularly impressed by them. Drinks is a simple affair, green tea at $1.20 refillable and coke is $2.50.

Another thing that i think they might be able to improve perhaps is the menu layout, if I have seen the menu before I walked in, I think I might not have gone in at all because the photos of the sushi and food was really dull literally.

To me it wasn’t that appetizing because the photos are all so gloomy, there just wasn’t any colors or strong selling point or anything that will entice you to order some more.

So after I have checked through the menu several times, I decided to order some temaki and also a futomaki with spicy salmon Inari sushi ($3.20) Even my husband was quite surprise how disinterested I was in my order.

My husband has always been a big fan of maguro sushi ($3.20) so when his order arrive, he just chowed down his beloved tuna sushi, but mid way he just asked me to see his sushi and he just did a flip and showed me just how the sushi look, the sushi rice was shaped like a small pebble with a sashimi over it. It didn’t taste bad actually but just bland, and the rice was rather hard.

We wonder why the rice tasted so bland and even the sashimi could not help to perk up the rice. Futomaki ($3.20)isn’t that bad as there are generous fillings in it, but again the rice just tasted…bland. Soya sauce that goes with the sushi is also not as robust like other sushi place.

There temaki handroll is made on the spot, it comes in “slimmer” version, and has less rice in it.
Tekka Temaki – $3.20
Negitoro Temaki – $4.60
Spicy Soft Shell Crab Temaki – $3.80
Spicy Salmon Skin Temaki – $3.20

I ordered a soft shell crab temaki and it comes piping hot, as they just fried the soft shell crab, it goes well with the fish roe but because it is warm, the seaweed ended up getting really tough and I had difficulty to tear it through.

Salmon skin temaki was rather a forgettable affair, salmon skin was really tough rather than crunchy, and was rather hard to finish up too.

All in all, not exactly what I expected, not bad actually but definitely nothing to shout about, their sashimi is fresh, the hamachi ($3.20), Tai sushi ($3.20) and tuna was good, but it is just the rice that is not really our cup of tea. Hope this can change in the future and we can patronize them again.

Oh by the way currently OCBC credit card promotion 10% off, while promotion last~!
