Was at Serangoon Nex over the weekend, looking for something light as my family was feeling under the weather lately. My husband recommended to go and eat Japanese soba, so we went to Shimbashi soba to try out their famous handmade buckwheat soba noodles. As it was early lunch, we didn’t get to see any soba making action but only the machine which grinds the soba powder.<\/p>\n

We ordered a couple of sets :<\/p>\n

• Oyako don & warm soba set (Chicken cutlets with egg on rice bowl) ($15.90++)<\/li>\n

  <\/a><\/ul>\n

  I was not expecting much when ordering the oyako don in a soba restaurant but was quite suprised that it actually tasted pretty good and my son liked it too. The sauce\u00a0was a balance of sweetness & savory, soaked up by\u00a0the\u00a0deep fried chicken cutlets\u00a0cooked in eggs & onions, topped with seaweeds flakes.<\/p>\n

  The soba was cooked al dente and I like the texture very much, so did my son which he ferociously chowing down the soba, the dashi soup was not overly salty with the crunchy tempura bits, which can be quite additive, I was even\u00a0trying to put bits of these tempura bits on every slurp of the soba!<\/p>\n

  • Ume Oroshi Soba set (Japanese plums & grated radish in warm soba)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    <\/a><\/p>\n

    I actually like the ume\u00a0& daikon oroshi (plum n grated radish) that was added to the soup base, as the plum added some tangy flavor to it, the nameko (Japanese mushroom) compliments well with the soba.<\/p>\n

    As they place the tempura separately rather than directly in the soup, it adds a nice touch to it, as\u00a0 it won’t go all soggy n the coating start falling apart by the time it is served. They also serve some tempura dipping sauce on the side\u00a0just in case you might want some rather than dip into the soba soup.<\/p>\n

    • & 1 salmon mayo handroll ($4.8++)<\/li>\n

      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n

      As I ordered the salmon mayo temaki (handroll), I was expecting it to be salmon sashimi in mayo, so I was a little disappointed when it turned out cooked salmon with mayo instead. But having the fish roe toppings did add a little more bite to it. I still wish it was salmon sashimi instead thou, so right after dinner, I went next stall at ichiban boshi to take away a salmon handroll at the counter for $2.80.<\/p>\n

      Overall the soba was of good quality as it is handmade, you will not get the instant soba texture which can be quite chewy and thick at times. You will enjoy every slurp of the soba just like how my family did.<\/p>\n
