Whenever I got to Meidiya Japanese Supermarket, my husband or me will get some mochi home as snack, they have these ready to eat mochi available in the supermarket, actually near the cashier, and we usually get just a pack which is our old favourites, red bean mochi.<\/p>\n

So this time round, I thought I will try out something new, and decided to get Ohagi which is basically Japanese Sweet Rice Balls.<\/p>\n

Unlike the regular mochi which is made of mochi flour, these sweet rice balls, is really using rice or glutinous rice. So the texture is not as chewy.<\/p>\n

I use to make these a lot when I was still flatting with my Japanese flatmates, these are so easy to make yet so tasty, so I usually will make several plates at one go and bring to parties. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

It is quite common to have these sweet rice balls going with red bean paste or kinako powder which is soya bean powder.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

I personally always choose the soya bean powder flavour, because it adds a lot of nutty flavour to it. And with the red bean fillings, it is just like party in my mouth. Well, anyway, back to this ohagi which I bought from Meidiya, it cost $5 for a pack of 2, actually doesn’t really come cheap, so I was expecting for a certain quality.<\/p>\n

But I was a little disappointed because the rice they used are too soft, which lacks the texture that makes me fall in love with. The red bean paste is pretty good though, however it is also a little too thick to my likings. Well, probably next time I will stick to my $2.50 for 2 mochi set instead. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Hmm.. may be it will be good too to do up a recipe for this Ohagi. \ud83d\ude42 Stay tune!<\/p>\n
