Hi there

One of my favorite hobbies is to travel, but having a day time job, it is rather difficult to apply for extended leave to go travelling with my family. But here in Singapore, there is always a remedy and it is staycations. You are really spoilt for choice for these kind of “mini vacations”.

So over the weekend as in coincide with our wedding anniversary, my husband and me had decided to stay over at the Wangz hotel for our anniversary and also explore restaurants and food places around the vicinity.

"Wangz

Since I am staying there, thought of sharing my experience in it, as I see a lot of couples there, i think the idea of weekend staycation is really catching up as i also see deals as such on sites like deal.com. This review can be quite detail as I hope you can see all the actual aspects and get the “real deal” from your home before you plan your next staycation destination. 🙂

Wangz hotel is located at Outram. As I do not drive, we went there by train. It is located pretty close to the station exit and around 10 mins of leisure walk from exit B.

From afar, you can see it right behind the flyover. A building rather prominent and unique on it’s own among the backdrop of shophouses and low rise buildings. Actually it looks like a giant beer barrel so you won’t miss it. 🙂

"Wangz

They pride themselves as being a peaceful urban oasis, I can tell why, there aren’t much crowd over there, surrounding areas are really nice to walk around to explore too.

Decorations of the hotel are sleek and modern with artistic decor everywhere. Wangz Hotel’s 41 exquisitely designed rooms offer both elegance and functionality. The walls, upholstery, and bedding lend a striking backdrop to the floral and nature-inspired artwork and wall features.

"Wangz

"Wangz

The reception service is swift and courteous and we were lead to our room in minutes. It is not a boutique hotel, and is located next to Link Hotel, so it is rather a big contrast.

"Wangz

Corridors are placed with some bold decorations to accentuate the theme of the hotel. Every room in the Wangz hotel is supposed to be different as part of their uniqueness.

The bedding were fluffy as they use goose feather pillow & goose down duvets, which is great to cosy up in bed while watching in room entertainment. "Wangz

The air con however is not that cold at night, I am unsure if it is due to the duvets or not, but I find it rather warm at that night stay. Another issue is that they use sensor lock for the doors, so when we reached our room we had difficulties opening up, as the batteries were low, however, they fix it up quickly and the staff did apologise for it , a little hiccup.

"Wangz

They provide standard magazines and newspaper and also usual cable channels which normal hotels offers. I remember they have about 10 channels in total. They also provide free wireless internet access throughout the hotel.

"Wangz

Rooms are spacious and neatly decorated, which is a good start to the staycation.

"Wangz

There are also interesting looking decorations that look so stylish in the room, I actually wish I could get hold of some of the pieces or ask the front desk where they source it from.

"Wangz

As the hotel is covered with a gleaming aluminium cladding and asymmetrically-placed wide windows, it will block direct view from outside during the day. Of course at night you might wish to close it up, because I can foresee it can paint a rather clear view from just outside the road.

"Wangz

In room amenities include the usual Twinings tea bags, but they do put in a variety of flavours which is a nice touch. You can use the Twinings tea pots provided in the room to sip your cuppa while you relax in your room. The hotel package comes with non-alcoholic beverages from the mini bar. I am unsure if this is the standard in Wangz hotel thou.

"Wangz

"Wangz

As to the mini bar, the selection was few, but you still get your complimentary bottled waters. By the way, I just would like to give kuddos to them, you see, sometimes hotel give you complimentary bottle water but the bottles can be so miserably small, as if it is some kind of devious plan to direct you to the mini bar for more. 🙂

"Wangz

However, over at Wangz Hotel, they provide large bottles which is so much more convenient and thoughtful to the guests. I mean the comfort of the guests is the fundamental rules right? 🙂

"Wangz

Now moving on to the bathroom, they have a spacious bathtub, with shower facilities, and rainforest shower. I have never been a fan of rainforest shower, it just feel like “not here not there” kind of feeling when you use it, since it is so high up, the water effect felt kind of strange, but when I try it at Wangz Hotel, I changed my mind.

"Wangz

The bathtub is very spacious and it comes with yet another shower head, so it is very convenient if you want to clean the bathtub before you run your bubble bath in it. The shower facilities is really good compared to many hotels. Actually although I am not a big fan of rainforest shower, I must say this one that I used at Wangz Hotel is among the best I have tried because the water pressure is just nice.

They also have makeup mirror whereby all the ladies out there will love, it comes with an auto switch off function, so you don’t need to switch it off after using it.

"Wangz

One thing thou, the bathroom door is made of tampered glass, so you might not get the privacy you want, since the toilet is located just right next to it 😛

"Wangz

Bathroom amenities include toothbrush, shaver, sewing kid, cotton pad, flossing and moisturiser – the works.

"Wangz

What they also pride in is that they only use Molton Brown brands in their hotel, so you get to try out the products at the same time. Their package include shampoo & conditioner, bath gel, moisturiser and also bath sea salt.

"Wangz

One thing that always get me is that the shampoo that hotels usually provide will dry out my hair and the body soap will also make me itch as I have sensitive skin, so I always bring along my toiletries wherever I go, however, I thought I will give the Molton Brown products a try, and the products turned out fantastic, my husband even commented of getting some next time when we are at Takashimaya.

"Wangz

The scent of the products were so lovely, and especially love the bath sea salt too, love the smell and felt so relaxing soaking in the bathtub with it.

"Wangz

They also have iron and iron board in the warobe, the warobe lightings are auto sensor, so the lights will turn on when you slide open it, eco friendly. They provide bathrooms and slippers and hair dryer too.

Now we will talk about the food. Yup, they have a restaurant right at the entrance which I found rather ackward actually, I was thinking that more like a lounge or lobby, until my husband told me the reception told him this is the hotel restaurant called Nectar. They served up some Asian fushion cuisine over there and have on going promotions for it which you can read at the bottom of the post.

"Wangz

But for us, we only got to try out their buffet breakfast, not a wide spread like those you get from major league hotels but a decent spead of breakfast items. There are salad greens, smoked salmon, some cold cuts, assorted cheese and crackers.

"Wangz

There are also assorted pastries with toaster for you to heat up. Some dull looking fried kway teoh, which turned out to be excellent tasting when we tried it.

"Wangz

You will also get to choose how you want your eggs to be, scrambled, poached, hard boiled, soft boiled, omelete to pair with chicken sausage, bacon and ketchup beans.

"Wangz

Your daily cereal with milk and yogurt fix are all next to the fruits platter.

"Wangz

We decided to have scrambled eggs with bacon and also omelette with chicken sausages. The chicken sausages were mediocre, but the bacon were excellent, nicely cooked with burnt bits, sinfully delicious. Both the scrambled eggs and omelette were nicely cooked, buttery and piping hot.

"Wangz

"Wangz

Here is just some canapes which I made out of the smoke salmon & parma ham spread. They tasted so good with camembert cheese and crackers. Couldn’t stop having that.

"Wangz

Fruits were fresh and sweet. However the pastries were a bit of a let down. Can be rather dry, especially the scones, may be the toast are a better option here.

"Wangz

The decoration on the table look very pretty with the table mat too. The ambience is really nice as you get to enjoy your breakfast, while there is some sunlight shining through.

"Wangz

"Wangz

They also provide free internet usage at the Mac PC next to the reception, as I was sitting there, I see guests asking the reception counter for charger to their Iphones etc and also handphone rental.

"Wangz

They also have shuttle bus service hourly to bring you to Chinatown, Orchard area which is so convenient for guests.

"Wangz

"Wangz

Before checking out from the hotel, I popped by the scenic rooftop lounge Halo as I did not go there the previous night. The view is magnificent, as you can enjoy the greenery and the open sky. I think the ambience must be really cosy where you can kick back and enjoy your cocktail or beer while chatting with your friends. Or even watch some match there at times.

"Wangz

As it is open air, you can feel the light breeze, and enjoy the fresh air & sunlight.

"Wangz

"Wangz

I also found a lot of champagne bottle as well, probably from the hard partying the previous night?

"Wangz

I think this is also a great place to host a small event or parties, where you can get your privacy and also spacious enough, great place to mingle.

"Wangz

They also have a couple of coolers, so I think for those humid warm evenings, you will also be assured that you are being taken care of.

"Wangz

"Wangz

Check out was also swift, and as I wanted to go and checked out Great World City, I asked the reception how far it was to walk there, he quickly replied me that he can arrange the hotel van to bring us there instead. That’s what I call good service 🙂

Next to Wangz hotel, there are quite a few eateries and great world city is just 2 mins rides away. There is a tiong bahru pau next to it too, where I kept seeing queues of customers waiting to get their hands on the freshly steamed buns. Some prata shops, and many chinese restaurants. Zion road is also near to the place, so you can drop by to try out some hawker food. But if your theme is more upmarket, then you won’t get disappointed too, as Great World City where it host quite a few good restaurants is just about 10 mins walk away.

Room rates and packages start from $200 over and they have a variety of rooms and packages to choose from.

Of course, I wouldn’t miss out any restaurant promotions as well. If you are a DBS/POSB credit cardmember, Nectar at Wangz Hotel is having $15 Nett Set Lunch Promotions just for you, 2 courses with a drink, add another $5 Nett for a Molten Lava Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice-Cream. As at 28 October 2011, while menu lasts!

Overall, I think this boutique hotel is really a nice little gem. I agree with their theme of peaceful urban oasis. Even if you go to other hotels in town, you might not get that peace and quiet this hotel offers to the guest. Besides the hiccups which we experienced, I do recommend you to try and stay out there for a delightful relaxing staycation.
