OLD ELPASO TACO KIT REVIEW – SECOND TAKE STILL REALLY GOOD

Hi there

Our family loves Tacos, and because it is so easy to make and something different from your daily rice and noodles, I do make this quite often. 🙂

In the last Robinson Expo sale, I spotted these Old El Paso Taco Kit, going for $9.50 for 2, which is at a very good deal, so I bought a few boxes and wait for the cravings to hit and cook up some of these munchies.

Each Old El Paso Taco Kit comes with 12 small taco shells, one pack of seasoning and one pack of salsa, so this is pretty much stress free, you don’t need to even think of what salsa you will need to use.

Other ingredients that you will need include : (for 24 taco shells)

  • Lettuce x half, sliced finely

  • Tomatoes x half box (I prefered baby tomatoes, and deseed), cut in cubes
  • Cheddar cheese slices x 3 slices
  • Minced Beef (you can change to chicken cubes, fish cubes, or beef steak too) x 2 packs

These Tacos are like a mini salad with added crunch, my son loves to munch on the taco shells too, all these must be baked, however it is not necessary for you to pre heat the oven. 🙂

Prepare all your ingredents and place on a plate so it is much easy for you to sprinkle all the ingredients.

Directions :

1) Fry the minced beef without oil, (as the frozen minced beef carries quite a bit of oil), fry it for 3 mins until the oil start to appear, scoop the oil out with a spoon. We want to make it as healthy as possible 🙂

2) Pour in the Taco seasoning and fry for 2 min until brown, drizzle with some japanese cooking wine or mirin (optional), and let it cook for 30 secs more, until all beef are fragrant and cooked. Let it cool down. Don’t worry if you end up cooking too much minced beef, you can always save it to fry with some spaghetti too. 🙂

3) Line all the taco shells on the oven tray, and scoop the cooked beef.

4) Place the pieces of cheddar cheese on top of the beef

5) Heat them in the oven under 200 degrees, for 2 mins, monitoring it, as not to burn the taco shells, as long as the taco shells started to brown, that means it is already crunchy enough to serve.

One thing to take note, when the taco shells are heated, they usually will start to close up a little bit, so make sure it does not drop down on to the oven base and get burnt.

6) Sprinkle some lettuce and tomatoes and then scoop in some taco sauce and you are good to tuck in. 🙂

This dish is great for party too, easy to make and can make many at one go, (provided your oven is big enough that is). 🙂

So far when I purchased this, I will occasionally once in a blue moon greeted by one or two cracked taco shells. But no worries on that, you can always make an open face taco, just lay the cracked shell flat put the ingredients on top of the taco shells instead. Or else if it is cracked really badly, just sprinkle the toasted taco shells onto the salad make of lettuce, tomatoes and minced beef. 🙂

Now you see, this recipe is pretty much fool proof. 🙂 Do try it out, I like the Old EL Paso brand, their products usually are pretty good, the seasoning and the salsa sauce are quite sufficient to make out 12 tacos.

In fact, I used only 1 pack of seasoning for 2 pack of frozen minced beef and it is still very tasty, so the other seasoning pack, I can keep it for future use, may be as a marinate for steak or chicken. 🙂

As Mexican food is getting popular in Singapore these days, you can also try to make some at home. 🙂
