PRODUCT REVIEW – DAISO JAPANESE SNACK (TOHATO CARAKIRA CORN – CARAMEL CORN PUFFS)

Hi There,

I am sure many of you must have tried the Tohato caramel corn snack. The salty caramel coated corn puffs. The red packaging, and the buttery caramel aroma the moment you open the package…ah.. bring back my childhood memories.

Well, at Daiso, they have a wide range of Tohato caramel puffs, didn’t quite catch my eyes at first, but over the weekend, I saw a new printed word “40th” anniversary on a new cool blue packaging, so I decided to check it out.

I am a sucker for anything, that is, as long as the packaging states “xxth anniversay”, “limited winter promotions”, etc etc.. all these key words just tempt you to take a second look, hoping you are not missing out anything good. And I must say Japanese products have pretty much embodied this clever concept to their food products, every time I go to Japan, I will get to see limited edition of so many different kinds of food, chips, chocolates, sweets, cup noodles, and it just never ends there, with 4 seasons, their promotion items is just never ending..

So to my delight, I paid my $2 and went home with this cute little package of caramel corn puffs. On the packaging, it states 40th anniversay, with this new flavour to celebrate this huge milestone, and the flavour, is none other than – Salty Vanilla, I know, it does sound a little bit strange, but think about it, many dessert recipes call for a pinch of salt to help to balance or rather bring out the sweet flavour of the dessert. So it does make some sense. And with these little pieces of white corn puffs, shimmering against the backdrop of the silver blue packaging, it makes it even more appealing to me.

First bite, you will taste the saltiness of the corn puffs, and gradually with a hint of vanilla + caramel aroma, it does feel like this combination compliments each other, the sweet and the salty, better than cinema popcorn I would say. Actually I think the saltiness does bring out the vanilla caramel flavour. It is rather addictive, but the downside is that it gets stale very quickly, within 10 mins of leaving it on the bowl, it just gets soften so quickly, oh well, might as well, it just took me two sittings to finish it, I think there is probably a reason for it ^^
