DAISO SNACK ATTACK – DAISO MICROWAVE POP CORN REVIEWS

Hi there

My son has been eyeing for this pack of pop corn for quite sometime whenever we go to Daiso, it all started his “first official popcorn session” when I brought him to watch his first movie in the cinema and whenever we talked about movie, he will just say popcorn ^^”

Daiso Popcorn Reviews

I think I have quite a handful of experience making popcorn, using those packets sold at supermarkets, just microwave couple of minutes and you have all these puffy savory popcorn, the butter salt flavour has always been my favourite when I make it at home, which is why I only eat sweet caramel popcorn in theatre. 🙂

Daiso Popcorn Reviews

So after a little discussion of how he will be a good boy at home watching our favourite show, I have made a deal to purchase this and the fact that he still could not understand how a flat pack can turn into a big pack of popcorn excites him a lot too. 🙂

THE LOW DOWN OF VARIOUS SINGAPORE SUPERMARKETS

Hi there,

I am an avid shopper, grocery shopper that’s it, and mainly from supermarket. 🙂

It always make me happy and relaxing checking out various products available instore, you can always find gems down the shopping aisles, and even brimming with joy when you know you got a very good deal from the supermarket.

Okay, I would love to say I can do the same to clothing or shoes, but the fact is that it is so much easier on the wallet if I channel this onto supermarket shopping, at least the things I buy is something which I can share with my family and I find the rate of return is much higher. 🙂

Now as to readers who find it mind boggling to shop around supermarkets or to any newbies that reach our Singapore shore, you can check out my few tips that will ease your supermarket trips just a tad easier 🙂

Cold Storage – Great for people who want to buy Western products, Japanese products, extensive range, pricing is slightly higher but they do have many gems, they carry good dips and bread varieties. Good grill items and delicatessan items. They are also one of the supermarkets which I find is keen to slash their price to clear stocks. I see this very often in Japan which I think is the “right way” of doing things, clearing stocks by reducing the price, that way customers can try on some of the products which they normally don’t try and supermarkets also get to clear their stock. Even better, customers love the products and return to get some more. They have their own house brand called No-frills.

Fairprice – neighbourhood supermarkets, where you can get daily bargains at very good prices. However they carry more Asian products so if you want to get any specific sauces or condiments, you might want to get it from other supermarkets, their house brand Pasar is good.

Fairprice Xtra – one of the leading hypermarket in Singapore, you can find everything you need there, from cooking utensils, to exercise gadgets, TV to milk powders, all under one roof. The thing I like about them is that they have these kids trolleys where a mini trolley attached to a kids automobile. Kids love it and parents get to have a peace of mind shopping there.

Fairprice Finest – this is the Fairprice you want to go for high end products, they pride themselves in serving fresh oysters, seafood and many products which you do not normally see in regular Fairprice, thus the name Finest. Love to go there to check out their new products and be amazed by their extensive range which you do not normally see.

Fairprice Express – this is another supermarkets as what its name state, express, you get things to meet your quick daily needs on the go. Prices is slightly higher than fairprice supermarkets, so its the convenience you are paying. You can find ammenities, great for tourist or when you need something on the go. They also have corners where they sell cooked food like Polar cakes, Delifrance pastries. Usually can be found in Petrol stations.

Sheng Siong – great place to source for products from South east asia and live seafood. I like to go there to check out China and Vietnamese products, great price, but shoppers might find it somewhat a different shopping experience, as things do not pack as nicely as those you will find in Fairprice & Cold storage. However, it is close to wet market as it can be.

Mustafa – another great place & gem, many people are actually apprehensive to go there, but honestly I love to shop there. As they carry very wide products range, it might take time to dig out the gems, its a hypermarket, which is the first to open 24 hours in Singapore, they sell jewellery, clothing, electronics and food. Huge range of spices, and you can get the same spice you can buy at other supermarket at fraction of a price. A must go if you want to look for authentic spices and naan to cook Indian food. But make sure to check out the expiry date carefully as they have a very wide range of products, so turnover rate might not be as fast as other supermarkets.

Shop n Save – neighbourhood supermarket, which is good to get all your grocery if you do not want to leave your home too far.

Giant – hypermarket that has extensive range of products from Malaysia. You can get practically most of the things you need for your daily usage, electronics, food, toys, etc. It actually reminded me of Sheng Siong, they level up the same range.

Carrefour – hypermarket which is different from Giant and Fairprice, they carry more French items at very good pricing. Love their house brands, consistent good quality at good pricing and usually things you don’t try very often like olives, mustard mayo and cereal. They have one of the best and widest range of bread and pastries there. Always going at a promotional rate and you can also sample the bread before you purchase. One thing that not many people know is that if you get a loaf of bread from them, you can actually ask the staff to slice it up for you, that way you do not need to trouble yourself to do it at home.

Meidiya japanese supermarket– a must go for all Japanese, to get their dose of Japanese products. From fresh produce to frozen products, to sushi and sashimi. Although it is a Japanese supermarket, you will find many locals starting to patronize them and try out Japanese products from there. Good meat range and vegetables. It is pricier to get there, but what I do is I will get sauces & condiments and for vegetables and meat I will get from local supermarket when I am on a budget. Their sushi & sashimi is also at reduced price after 7pm, heard that is quite popular.

Isetan japanese supermarket – another must go for Japanese, great sushi & sashimi range and meat range. A few kiosk that sell cooked food like Korean, Western like grilled items and sandwiches and lunch box. Always have food fairs there so it is never boring going there. I like to go there over the weekends, if I want to have a theme dinner, as they have a good mixture of cuisine, if I am lazy to cook, just pop by to grab bits of everything to enjoy the feast.

Daiso – I am still inbetween as to whether I should call this a supermarket, because of their products sold, although they do not have fresh produce, but they carry enough items to call it a supermarket. Everything is priced at $2 and what’s more to ask for?

All in all, I would say most supermarkets in singapore carries quite good range of products from Asia countries like Taiwan, Korea & Japan as people these days are more curious and like to try out some exotic products. And as people are getting busier these days, 24 hours outlets are beginning to sprout out at many places.

If you want to find out the supermarkets nearest to your locations, just check out my other posts which has the address and business hours.

QUICK & SIMPLE RECIPE – DAISO COLD NOODLES WITH A TWIST

Hi there,

Do you like cold Japanese soba? cold springy noodles soaked in flavourful dashi sauce. Great for a hot sunny day to relief you from the heat. So how about Japanese Cold Noodles with a Twist and even better, a quick & simple recipe.

As I mentioned in my previous post I am a big fan of Daiso and always on the lookout for their products. I got another good buy this time.

I have always like Hiyashichuka, which is Japanese cold or chilled noodles, but ironically Japanese people call it Chinese Cold Noodles. However, they are somewhat different from normal soba, actually if you have it in Japan, they are usually like ramen noodles but in chilled form. It usually comes with heaps of colorful toppings, with a refreshing citrusy tangy flavourful dressing on it.

Daiso Cold Noodles & Packet Sauce

I think this product is good for people who like cold noodles with a twist, it is practically a hybrid between a salad and noodles. I use to love it during my school days because it is low calories and as I love salad too, this is a very satisfying meal that is healthy & filling and you can go very creative with this.

Daiso Cold Noodles Hiyashichuka

As time goes by, I have totally forgotten about this and usually just go for my ramen fix so I was very excited when I see this at Daiso.

On the packaging, it says Lemon Flavour, and comes with 2 packet of dressing with noodles. One pack is for 2 servings, but I really recommend you to have 3 people sharing it, as the portion can be quite large after you have added all the toppings. 🙂

QUICK & SIMPLE RECIPES – SEAWEED SALAD FROM DAISO

Hi there,

I got this pack of seaweed from Daiso during one of my hunt for Daiso goodies at Rivervale Mall. If you like seaweed or perhaps want some changes to your usual vegetable salad, you can try out this dry seaweed pack. It is quick & simple to make and requires zero cooking.

daiso seaweed salad

It is only 16 kcal & also contains kanten, a form of “agar agar”, which is both delicious & healthy. Japanese ladies love to eat kanten as a form of diet too. Ingredients is all up to you, whatever you want to put in, you can put in some chicken breast too if you want to up your protein, but I personally prefer just only seaweed + cherry tomatoes + cucumber slices.

KITCHEN GADGETS REVIEW – SESAME GRINDER FROM DAISO

Hi there,

I am not sure if you have seen this sesame grinder from Daiso before, but for me this is one kitchen gadget that is a must have.

Have you been to Japanese restaurants like Tonkichi where they will serve their deep fried pork cutlet with a clay bowl of sesame & a wooden stick, so that you can grind and sprinkle the grinded sesame over the pork cutlet?

The clay grinder does serve it purpose when you need to grind the sesame, but it is really a hassle to wash it afterwards, and I totally resent it, even thou I like to sprinkle sesame on to my dishes, the hassle of having to wash and dig up the sesame pieces really deter me from using, so imagine how happy I was when I saw this sesame grinder in Japan a few years back. As a matter of fact, I saw quite a few restaurants over there have this, sitting next to the pepper and chilli powder, and once I gave it a try, I totally got hooked on it. haha..

sesame grinder

While back in singapore, I chanced upon this exact same grinder in Daiso, and snapped it up happily & has been using it ever since. This bottle is purely use for grinding sesame as the grinding portion is make of plastic, it will not be any help if you were to grind pepper or any spices with a hard shell.

Usage is simple, all you need to do is to fill the bottle with some roasted sesame, which you can easily get from supermarkets, or you can get raw sesame and roast it yourself, (but remember to cool the sesame thoroughly before you put in the bottle, if not the moisture from the heat will turn the sesame bad in days)

Hold onto the white knob and rotate it in circular motion, and all the sesame will be grinded and goes directly into any dishes. You don’t even need to do any washing after that. Simple to use, and save up so much time & effort from all the pounding & grinding.

Besides the easy usage, it does makes a big difference to the dish, the grinded sesame does not only smell wonderfully due to it being freshly grinded, but the oil in the sesame will be released during the grinding, so you can taste the sesame flavour even more.

This is really one useful kitchen gadget, and what’s more? Its only $2, there is really nothing I can complain about. So do check it out when you are Daiso next time.

PRODUCT REVIEW – DAISO JAPANESE SNACK (TOHATO CARAKIRA CORN – CARAMEL CORN PUFFS)

Hi There,

I am sure many of you must have tried the Tohato caramel corn snack. The salty caramel coated corn puffs. The red packaging, and the buttery caramel aroma the moment you open the package…ah.. bring back my childhood memories.

Well, at Daiso, they have a wide range of Tohato caramel puffs, didn’t quite catch my eyes at first, but over the weekend, I saw a new printed word “40th” anniversary on a new cool blue packaging, so I decided to check it out.

I am a sucker for anything, that is, as long as the packaging states “xxth anniversay”, “limited winter promotions”, etc etc.. all these key words just tempt you to take a second look, hoping you are not missing out anything good. And I must say Japanese products have pretty much embodied this clever concept to their food products, every time I go to Japan, I will get to see limited edition of so many different kinds of food, chips, chocolates, sweets, cup noodles, and it just never ends there, with 4 seasons, their promotion items is just never ending..

So to my delight, I paid my $2 and went home with this cute little package of caramel corn puffs. On the packaging, it states 40th anniversay, with this new flavour to celebrate this huge milestone, and the flavour, is none other than – Salty Vanilla, I know, it does sound a little bit strange, but think about it, many dessert recipes call for a pinch of salt to help to balance or rather bring out the sweet flavour of the dessert. So it does make some sense. And with these little pieces of white corn puffs, shimmering against the backdrop of the silver blue packaging, it makes it even more appealing to me.

First bite, you will taste the saltiness of the corn puffs, and gradually with a hint of vanilla + caramel aroma, it does feel like this combination compliments each other, the sweet and the salty, better than cinema popcorn I would say. Actually I think the saltiness does bring out the vanilla caramel flavour. It is rather addictive, but the downside is that it gets stale very quickly, within 10 mins of leaving it on the bowl, it just gets soften so quickly, oh well, might as well, it just took me two sittings to finish it, I think there is probably a reason for it ^^
