WANGZ HOTEL STAYCATION REVIEWS & NECTAR RESTAURANT $15NETT SET LUNCH PROMOTIONS

Hi there

One of my favorite hobbies is to travel, but having a day time job, it is rather difficult to apply for extended leave to go travelling with my family. But here in Singapore, there is always a remedy and it is staycations. You are really spoilt for choice for these kind of “mini vacations”.

So over the weekend as in coincide with our wedding anniversary, my husband and me had decided to stay over at the Wangz hotel for our anniversary and also explore restaurants and food places around the vicinity.

Since I am staying there, thought of sharing my experience in it, as I see a lot of couples there, i think the idea of weekend staycation is really catching up as i also see deals as such on sites like deal.com. This review can be quite detail as I hope you can see all the actual aspects and get the “real deal” from your home before you plan your next staycation destination. 🙂

KITCHEN GADGETS REVIEW – SESAME GRINDER FROM DAISO

Hi there,

I am not sure if you have seen this sesame grinder from Daiso before, but for me this is one kitchen gadget that is a must have.

Have you been to Japanese restaurants like Tonkichi where they will serve their deep fried pork cutlet with a clay bowl of sesame & a wooden stick, so that you can grind and sprinkle the grinded sesame over the pork cutlet?

The clay grinder does serve it purpose when you need to grind the sesame, but it is really a hassle to wash it afterwards, and I totally resent it, even thou I like to sprinkle sesame on to my dishes, the hassle of having to wash and dig up the sesame pieces really deter me from using, so imagine how happy I was when I saw this sesame grinder in Japan a few years back. As a matter of fact, I saw quite a few restaurants over there have this, sitting next to the pepper and chilli powder, and once I gave it a try, I totally got hooked on it. haha..

sesame grinder

While back in singapore, I chanced upon this exact same grinder in Daiso, and snapped it up happily & has been using it ever since. This bottle is purely use for grinding sesame as the grinding portion is make of plastic, it will not be any help if you were to grind pepper or any spices with a hard shell.

Usage is simple, all you need to do is to fill the bottle with some roasted sesame, which you can easily get from supermarkets, or you can get raw sesame and roast it yourself, (but remember to cool the sesame thoroughly before you put in the bottle, if not the moisture from the heat will turn the sesame bad in days)

Hold onto the white knob and rotate it in circular motion, and all the sesame will be grinded and goes directly into any dishes. You don’t even need to do any washing after that. Simple to use, and save up so much time & effort from all the pounding & grinding.

Besides the easy usage, it does makes a big difference to the dish, the grinded sesame does not only smell wonderfully due to it being freshly grinded, but the oil in the sesame will be released during the grinding, so you can taste the sesame flavour even more.

This is really one useful kitchen gadget, and what’s more? Its only $2, there is really nothing I can complain about. So do check it out when you are Daiso next time.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS – OOTOYA JAPANESE RESTAURANT, AUTHENTIC HOME COOKED MEAL

Hi there,

I was at comex the other day, and decided to drop by Ootoya Japanese restaurant for a quick lunch. I had been to Ootoya at Orchard Central when they first opened, and also quite a few times in Bangkok where they have several branches. This is one of the place that its food speaks for itself. They serve authentic home cooked japanese food which is nutritious and good value.

ootoya

They don’t have much ads to market their brand but the consistent high quality & unpretentious japanese food at reasonable pricing has win them quite a no. of fans. It is really one of the better japanese food I have in Singapore.

They pride themselves in serving wild Mackerels & Alaska Salmons (not farmed ones) and has always maintain consistency in their dishes.

As for this visit, my family has opted for chicken rice bowl & udon set ; a mini hot soba for my son and also negisauce for myself.

negisauce

Pieces of fried chicken thigh meat served on salad greens, and topped off with potato salad and fresh sweet tomatoes. You can dizzle the dressing that comes with the dish, or just eat it on its own. If you are on a straight diet of no carbo, you can always just enjoy it on its own like a main salad.

Next came the udon with chicken rice bowl set. The udon was al dente and the soup was fantastic! It has graded raddish inside, so you can taste the saltiness of the dashi soup and the sweetness of the raddish. You can even add a little bit of heat by adding the japanese chili powder. You will definitely coming back for more!

Their menu also comes with an indication of the calories you will consume from each dish. Great for the health conscious so that they won’t bust their calorie count and at the same time enjoy their hearty meal.

I have attached some of their menu, so you can check out their wide variety of delicious japanese food. They also cater to take away as well, as they have a separate take away menu.  I have yet to try their dessert menu as their portion is quite filing, perhaps I might drop by during their tea time to check out their tea time menu as well.

Oh I forgot to mention, they also have free refills for rice and ocha

RESTAURANT REVIEWS – YAKIYAKIBO AT NEX

Hi there,

I was roaming around Serangoon Nex last week, trying to settle my hungry kid during lunch hour, came across this Tepanyaki restaurant YakiYakiBo which is at Shokutsu 10. I usually patronize Ichibanboshi quite a bit, and thought of changing somewhere else, and we spotted YakiYakiBo which was not very crowded on that day, so we thought of giving it a try.

yakiyakibo

Once seated we flipped through the menu and decided to go for one seafood set and one chicken set. We were first served with icy cold stick salad, and when I said “icy cold”, it literally mean it. The dressing goes well with the carrots and cucumber sticks.

Next we were served with the seafood set ($18.90++), which comes with 1 pc of salmon, 2 scallops, 3 shrimps & some squid, all cooked in the open concept teppan kitchen. My son loves the salmon, and my mum seemed to be rather happy with the scallops, but I feel the squid is slightly rubbery to my likings. Other than that, it is a good combo.

My order of chicken set ($13.90++) faired much better, the chicken thighs was nicely cooked, with crispy skin and also coated with nice portion of garlic flakes and spring onion. The black pepper sauce and BBQ sauce enhanced the combination of the succulent of the chicken meat with the crispyness of the chicken skin. To my surprise, the chicken itself does not feel oily at all, and make you feel like having more, my son will definitely agree so, judging by how he constantly asking me for some more chicken meat. Both set came with teppan beansprout to even out the meaty portion of the meal.

And to round it up, we were served with 2 slices of watermelon on each set, and it was a delightful end to the meal.

Yakiyakibo might not be one of the best Teppanyaki place in Singapore, but it sure serves decent and value for money teppanyaki meal, plus the enclosed open kitchen concept is good for people like me who hates to smell like a hot plate after teppanyaki meal.

Oh and they also serve the teppanyaki on toasted bread and part of the menu is on Japanese pancakes, Okonomiyaki, perhaps I might try it out next time.

They also have a reward card system, and every $20 spent entitle you to a stamp, the drill is that as you collect more of the stamp, you will get some freebies along the way, a nice little gesture to thank customers for returning, not a bad idea indeed.

RESTAURANT REVIEWS – STRICTLY PANCAKES

Hi there,

The other day my colleague was inviting a few of us to have pancakes for lunch, she was raving about how good the savory pancakes were especially the garlic buttered prawns w pancakes, my first thought was :
1) pancakes!? Is it going to be filling for lunch?
2) savory pancakes!? I luvvv garlic n somemore is on pancakes – I got to get my hands on it!

So we went to Prinsep street to look for the restaurant called Strictly pancakes, it was just one of the small restaurant along the Prinsep street. It has a upper level which I have yet to check out but judging by the crowd of mostly students from probably lasalle arts school and nafa, I would say they are definitely drawing the right crowd.

strictly pancakes

Ok back to the pancakes, once we were seated, we were being guided to the menu which teaches us how to order their delicious pancakes.

Step one
Choose your stack, basically the pieces you want which is small($5.5 for 2 pcs), medium($7 for 3 pcs) and large ($8.5 for 4 pcs)
Step Two
Choose your butter to go with the maple syrup, options of salted, unsalted, garlic & herbs and rum & raisin
Step Three
Order any add ons to make your combination or rely the good old standard menu

The garlic buttered prawns served with 3 piping hot pancakes, with a side of rocket salad, not bad of a start indeed! The buttery garlic sauce and the overload of the crushed garlic compliments very well with the thick fluffy pancakes, my colleagues ordered the other flavours, like chicken a la king and apple with cinnamon, which are delicious too.

$14 – succulent prawns sauteed with loads of garlic and butter, served with piping hot pancakes! The rocket salad was a nice touch, sort of clearing my palate for other flavours.

apple cinnamon strictly pancakes
$10 – Apple with Cinnamon
salmon run strictly pancakes
$13 Salmon run – smoked salmon served with dill sauce on pancakes
chicken a la king strictly pancakes
$13 chicken thigh with cream sauce serve with asparagus on top of pancakes

My recommendation is to polish off the first couple of pieces of pancakes with the garlic butter sauce and leave the last one to go with the maple syrup and butter. I personally love the rum and raisin because it instantly turns the savory dish into a dessert and the butter with a tiny hint of rum goes oh so well with the pancakes. A hands down winner.

maple syrup & rum & raisin strictly pancakes

Please don’t be fooled by the portion, just like me,  because it is actually very filling, I am not a small eater and when I hit my second piece, I am already calling for backup from my colleague. I recommend 2 orders if you have 3 pax or 3 orders for 4 pax, different varieties, so you glad to try on both on the savory and sweet pancakes.

I love pancakes in whatever form, especially when I make it for my son for breakfast but in the past I was just into the good old maple syrup and butter, who knows savory can go so well with pancakes! I was all pumped up to go to the supermarket and get myself some instant Japanese pancake powder so I can make some creative savory pancakes for my family, who knows another twist to the butter? Orange peel butter sounds good to me too^^
