TAWANDANG MICROBREWERY MODERN THAI CUISINE – BEER & THAI GERMAN FOOD EQUAL MERRY TIME

Hi there

This is my second time to visit Tawandang Microbrewery at Suntec, and it has been a year ago since my last visit, so when I saw this Groupon deal, I happily snapped up the offer so that I can bring my family to try out the food there, armed with my camera rather than my Iphone like my first post, this is going to be hands rubbing moment. 🙂

Tawandang Microbrewery at Suntec

It all started in 1999, where the Tawandang German Brewery launched in Bangkok, with good food, delicious thirst quenching beer and entertainment, this place turned out to be so successful that it even ended in the Time Magazine in 2003 as the world’s best Thai German Bar & Restaurant.

Standing right in front of the restaurant and you can find lots of newspaper clippings showing you just how good they are.

To dine there, I recommend you to go during the evening, as you can catch the live band performance there. The first time when I went there, it was a late dinner, so we got to enjoy songs after songs, sometimes you didn’t even forget you were actually still in Singapore with Thai ballads in the background, waiters and waitresses are all in good fun and will join the dancing and singing, so for ambience this place is close to no other.

This time round, as I went with my family, we decided to have a very early dinner, at 6pm to be exact, and the place is still quite quiet, only a few tables are occupied.

Okay, when it comes to the food, let’s just say first thing first the food is not exactly cheap there, but the portion is pretty large and the chillis sauce is to die for, so I guess the cost does justify the quality we get.

We tried the Minced Pork with Basil ($12++) as a starter, and most people know Thailand Basil is one of the best, just how sweet and fragrant is beyond your imagination. I got so hooked on their basil that I even think of bringing it back to Singapore when I was there in my last trip.

This dish is best eaten either with hot steam rice, or just take a scoop with the raw cabbage, the sweetness of the cabbage compliments the smoky minced pork which has thoroughly infused with the basil goodness, the roughly chopped spring onions gave it a lot of crunch too.

Sauteed Morning Glory with Shrimp Paste ($12++)  is one of my most favourite dish of all, if I am not wrong, their Morning Glory is actually Kang Kong in Singapore, however their version comes in chunkier healthy greens, which cooked perfectly well, every bite is like a party in your mouth seriously, hands down winner for this.

While I was in Bangkok, I tried the deep fried morning glory which I bought from Siam Paragon supermarket, although it was nice, but I find it a tad greasy although you can taste the sweetness, I am still sticking to the sauteed version. 🙂

Now comes the Deep Fried Seabass in 3 Sauces ($34++), actually when they serve me this, I was rather puzzle, because it doesn’t seem like 3 sauces to me, rather chilli spicy sauce, but when they serve it look really tempting, we also did not bother to ask them. I love my steam fish, but the occasion indulgence of perfectly deep fried whole fish with some superb sauce to go with sometimes rules me over. 🙂

Over here, their deep fried fish dishes are pretty good too, the outer layer are all nicely crisped up with the white fish meat portion very fluffy and cooked just right, ever bite is a salute to the chef who slave in the kitchen making this dish.

Tom Yum Soup with Prawns & Coconut Milk ($18) comes in this fiery concoction, it has this full on robust flavor of tom yum at medium heat, tangy, spicy, with a hint of sweetness, all bind together by the coconut milk, comes in generous portions of prawns and straw mushrooms. But the lemon grass and the leaves also are pretty generous, so it was a little hassle to kept picking up bits and pieces of lemon grass from your soup.

But we were rather disappointed with their rendition of Grilled Pork Ribs ($26++), it comes with just a few pieces, and the ribs also comes with very little meat, we would definitely more than welcome if they have given us more bite, or even more soft bone portions.

With that, there just wasn’t much they can grilled honestly, all you get is just bones and a thin layer of meat with has been way overcooked, and so tough to tear apart. What a pity, taste wise, it was so smoky and nice, and go with the chilli sauce, heavenly pair.

Tawandang Microbrewery at Suntec

They also host events, parties as well, if you want to think of a place to arrange for a fun party, you can also try out here, at least the waiters and waitresses can bring up the crowd with their Thai golden oldies and of course with a couple of German beer, everyone will be very merry. 🙂

In case you want to check out their menu and pricing, you can check out what other dishes you can order next time round. 🙂
